Imposter Game is a thrilling social deduction word game where players use clues to identify hidden imposters among them. Most players receive the same secret word, but the imposters receive a different word or no word at all.
Through clever questioning and observation, civilians attempt to find the imposters before it's too late. Meanwhile, imposters must blend in by giving vague clues while trying to figure out what the secret word is.
The game combines elements of psychology, strategy, and quick thinking, making every round unique and exciting. Perfect for parties, family gatherings, classrooms, and team building events.
Civilians
Receive the same secret word. Must identify imposters through questions and clues.
Imposters
Receive a different word or no word. Must blend in and avoid detection while gathering information.
Basic Game Rules
Game Objective
The objective varies depending on your role. Civilians work together to identify and eliminate imposters through careful observation and logical deduction. Imposters must blend in, avoid detection, and survive until the end or correctly guess the secret word.
Civilians Win When:
All imposters are successfully identified and eliminated through voting
Imposters Win When:
They survive until the end OR correctly guess the civilians' secret word
Role Distribution
At the start of each game, players are secretly assigned one of two roles. The distribution is automatic and random, ensuring fair gameplay every time.
In a typical 6-player game: 4-5 players are Civilians with the same secret word, and 1-2 players are Imposters with a different word or no word.
Understanding the Secret Word System
The secret word is the heart of the game. How players see their word depends on the game mode you're using. In Local Mode, players pass the device and view their secret role cards one by one on the shared screen. In Online Mode, each player sees their secret role on their own device through QR code or PIN code.
Step-by-Step Tutorial: How to Play
Setup Phase: Dealing the Cards
Before gameplay begins, roles must be distributed to all players. The setup process differs between Local and Online modes.
1. Add Players
Enter player names for everyone joining the game. Choose your preferred word pack theme and difficulty level.
2. Distribute Cards
Local Mode: Pass device for each player to view their role privately. Online Mode: Share room code/QR code with players to join.
3. View Secret Roles
Each player sees their role card showing either the secret word (civilians) or 'IMPOSTER' (imposters). Keep your role hidden!
Playing Phase: Giving Clues and Observing
This is the main gameplay phase where players give clues about their word. Pay close attention to what others say and how they say it.
1. Take Turns Giving Clues
Each player gives a one-word clue about their secret word. Clues should be specific enough to help teammates but vague enough to avoid helping imposters.
2. Think Strategically
Listen carefully to other players' clues. Look for inconsistencies, vague answers, or suspicious behavior patterns.
3. Stay Alert
Imposters will try to blend in by giving generic clues. Watch for players who seem uncertain or repeat others' words.
Voting Phase: Eliminating Suspects
After all players have given clues, it's time to discuss suspicions and vote to eliminate someone you believe is an imposter.
1. Discussion Time
Players discuss their suspicions and explain why they think certain players might be imposters. Share your reasoning but be careful not to reveal too much.
2. Cast Your Vote
Vote for the player you suspect is an imposter. In Local Mode, vote by raising hands or using your preferred method. In Online Mode, use the built-in voting system.
3. Reveal Results
The player with the most votes is eliminated and their role is revealed. If they were an imposter, continue playing. If all imposters are eliminated, civilians win!

Advanced Strategies & Pro Tips
Take your imposter game skills to the next level with these expert strategies for both civilians and imposters.
Civilian Tactics
Give Specific Clues Early
Establish credibility and help teammates identify the secret word theme by giving concrete clues in early rounds.
Build on Previous Clues
Create a chain of connected words that imposters can't easily follow. Reference earlier clues to prove you know the word.
Ask Follow-up Questions
Question players who give vague clues. Imposters often struggle with details and specific follow-ups will expose them.
Coordinate with Confirmed Civilians
Once you've identified other civilians, work together to create a voting bloc against suspicious imposters.
Imposter Tactics
Listen and Learn
Pay close attention to early clues to identify the word category before giving your own clue. The first few clues reveal a lot.
Give Moderately Specific Clues
Avoid being too vague or too specific. Give clues that could apply to multiple words - don't be too obvious or you'll be caught.
Strategically Accuse Others
Deflect suspicion by accusing other players. Create confusion among civilians and divert attention from yourself.
Time Your Guess Carefully
Only guess the secret word when you're confident or about to be eliminated. A wrong guess immediately reveals you're the imposter.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
Learn from these common errors that both new and experienced players make. Avoiding these mistakes will significantly improve your win rate.
Giving Too Obvious Clues
Avoid directly describing the word or using synonyms. This helps imposters guess the secret word and win instantly.
Being Too Vague as Civilian
Overly generic clues make you look suspicious. Balance specificity with subtlety to help teammates without revealing everything.
Not Observing Patterns
Pay attention to who gives clues first vs last, who hesitates, and who repeats others. These patterns reveal imposters.
Voting Too Early
Give all players a chance to speak before voting. Early voting means less information and higher chance of eliminating civilians.
